Found this link in Coridan's LJ.

An interesting discussion, and made me think about my own GMing (and what I've objected to in other GMs in the past).

I don't think I deprotagonise my players. At least, I think I'm aware of the danger and try not to do so, even if I hadn't formulated the concept in so many words. By the standards of that discussion, I think I'm an extremely "soft" GM - I'm happy to hand NPCs over to player control, let them decide setting details and so on.

Given the Swords setting (they're fairly junior members of a military organisation), it can be hard to avoid NPCs being more competent than them and giving them orders, but we usually seem to avoid having PCs upstaged. And the orders given can be arranged OOC: "what orders would you like your character to be given?.... fine, just add this bit, then go ahead and write the dialogue."

I do like my NPCs. I try not to have cardboard cut-outs, and making them fully interesting and 3D means they do need some screen time, but I hope I'm not overdoing it. Hope. I'm a writer, maybe I get carried away.

What worries me is the repeated comment in the thread that if players don't like something, they often don't say so, they just drift away. And this game keeps going awfully quiet...

At least I'm sure I'm not altering character concept on players without permission. Anything like that, we discuss in advance. Like now, when Egil (Adrian) needs some stimulus to push him towards going Devotee, but isn't sure what, and has given me permission to forcibly fail him in a contest so as to drive him into a suitable situation. What I've got in mind isn't something I'd have necessarily done without that permission, and once he's up the creek and paddle-less I'll give him a very free hand in whatever he tries to get out of it again.

Sorted my ACW uniform skirt last night. After a careful look at how the side join worked, took the waistband off the front, re-pleated, put it back on again. Same length waistband, but the last four inches has no skirt attached and is pure overlap. Made buttonhole, attached button (as the little hooks and eyes it came supplied with were a joke). So that's another job sorted for the weekend - we're off to Bridlington with the ACWS and I really hope the weather improves. Our "acquire and keep" licences turned up, too, so we can take home the black powder we'll need for Blaenau Ffestiniog (we're the only two going from the Washington). Dave is making boxes to store it in. If I get the time, I'm going to cut out the next blouse and do the main seams on the machine, then I can take it with me to hand-finish while I'm there. Also want to run up a bag for my hoops...

Caught up on the various PBeMs I'm in (though the Swords one is on to the next "scenario", and I now have to plan how a vampire will attack a nomad camp, and how the nomads would have attempted to defend it were it not for PC assistance). Warning - Swords players - please do not read replies, as they contain tactical advice!

Continued to discover the joys of home-made soup - until this week, my memories of recipes had included "now simmer for five hours stirring continuously". Looks like reality is more like "chop any veg you want shot of, simmer until softish while ignoring, put the result through the blender." Last night's effort was mainly celery and mushroom. Yum.

This morning I need to leave early to get to the post-office on the way, there's an important birthday present to post. Oh, and it's bin day, and I bet Dave hasn't...? no, he hasn't. Also I have a washing machine full of washing, and a dishwasher that needs running.

But, good bit, the Organic Veg box came yesterday, and had asparagus in it, and I just had some for breakfast. With smoked salmon, on rye bread. Mmmmmmm.

Work carries on with a major upgrade to a system I manage, and going by the last few days, we will continue to discover problems, and fix the problems, and the people who are meant to be assisting will be too busy with other projects to help. But I could really do with getting out early on Friday, so I need to make up the time today, so....

Then tonight we can sort out what needs packing for the weekend. I think ready-meals may be involved.

This is supposed to be the first event of the ACWS season: over at Doddington, near Ely.

But I've been knackered all week, and today the not-quite-a-cold has turned into really-a-cold. I'm home. I'm doped. I'm dithering. I still haven't finished the blouse that's part of the new uniform (button holes, bottom hem). I tried the work dress for round the campfire, and discovered that while I can now get into it sans corset (four inches off the waist is good!) the comparative lack of curves for it to hang from means it's about 4 inches too long. Round a fire, that's not good.

I should be finishing the blouse, turning up the dress, working out what to do about the latest turn in the Swords game I run, and dealing with any emails that come in. But my ability to do three things at once, or even one thing at once, seems to have gone to sleep. Well, sleep, I can do that...

right, if I look through the last dozen Swords posts and combine them into one file, I can mull over that while turning up the dress. With a CD on. Might work. I'd wondered about watching one of the DVD stack while sewing, but not sure I've got the brain-power for that level of multi-tasking.

Coffee. That would help. If I can remember to drink it this time.

Update: drank the coffee. Dress pinned up, half seam hemmed. Swords posts combined, read, mulling got nowhere, creativity switched off. Off to bed.

Spent the evening over at Chris' last night, being fed on various medieval cookery experiments, discussing what to do for the food at Letton, and so on. And Tracey and the girls were there, and it seems they're all coming to Letton. Great, first full weekend revel for them. "So what are you doing about extra garb?" I asked. It seems they weren't. One dress each, all weekend. And Diane's at least was never intended for running around in.

So.... Read more... )

right, off to:

All in two weeks. And that's just Far Isles.

A week later is Mel's Burns Night do - need something to wear, and a performance piece. Dave won't be going, but has decided he'd like the tartan trousers I was going to make anyway. So I need to get them cut out by then, and my matching sash made, and let Mel have her roll of tartan back.

Still need to keep the Swords game I'm running on the move (and write some stories that'll be background to the next bit of plot), play in Hazard Fort, since my PC has the lead at the moment (a RQ game that's been going for six years, and she's being tested to see if she can become an initiate!) Keep working on some background Gloranthan fiction for the Continuum con book in the summer.

More dress-making needed for when the ACW season starts - picked up my Vivandiere skirt and jacket yesterday, and it's very smart! Now I need the breeches and blouse. Oh, and we're going to re-write the Washington Artillery consitution, and there are improvements I want to do to their web-site, and oh yes, the Regimental Dinner is coming up and I'd better plan what I'm cooking for it...

Dave bought me Civ IV for Xmas. Looking at that to-do list, I don't dare install it.

Spent a bit longer on the PC Saturday morning than I'd intended, but despite leaving late, still got to Miki's more or less on time. The M25 behaved itself for once.

A good revel. Civilised. Games-playing, chatting, I did a bit of background harping though (as always) not as much as I'd intended. Much singing and telling of stories over the feast (the Fitz-Johns did their usuall excellent job of feeding us). I did "Sir Patrick Spens" as planned, though with a freeze just before the ladies get to wring their fingers white, for whch I will continue to kick myself for some considerable time. Also gave the Sherriff a beginners book of nice easy harp pieces, since it was his naming day revel and he wants to start learning. Will see him next week at the harp weekend!

At Miki's overnight, along with Brenda, so much happy chatting that night, the next morning, and over a pub lunch.

And then the skies opened: "the lift grew dark and the wind blew loud", as I was saying the previous night. And the M25 was less cooperative as a result.

Right, back from the Isles to the other worlds I inhabit. Caught up on the Upland Marsh, and on Hazard Fort. Need to do the next GM input to Swords, they've stopped chatting and are off to investigate the temple basement. And must get out of indecision paralysis in Shadowworld. Oh yes, and got to go to work...
