Hello all you cooks out there. My organic veg box has this week presented me with something that it assures me is a "kohl rabi". What do I do with it? Web searching so far suggests slicing and baking: any more ideas? And what's it going to be like when I've done so?

Our ex-greengrocer bass player suggested treating it like a potato - perhaps even mixing it in with mashed potato - very like slightly exotic potato, he said.

Greek fingy apparently, like a sort of cabbage. Never tried it myself, but when I think greece I think decent kebabs and cute Eurovision lasses ;)

hey, i just read that "victorian..." comment of yours and got nosy... (i´ve got way too much time on my hands)

as it happens, i´m about to have kohlrabi for dinner(it´s quite common in germany), so:
- you can peel it and eat it raw.
- standard recipe would be to peel it and cut it up like a potato, and also boil it in salt water that way. i wouldn´t mix them but consider them two veg.
´
my favourite recipe, however: (bit unusual but very tasty)
Kohlrabi and Gnocchi with Parmiggiano.

prepare gnocchi as directed
peel kohlrabi, cut up in gnocchi-size chunks. boil in or broth or salt water, 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how crunchy you like them.
add gnocchi, mix the two.
ad a spoonful of sour cream to the sauce (broth), stir, add herbs if you like.
serve with grated parmiggiano

yum
(off i go..)

"nosy" is fine, if I'd wanted this private I'd have locked it.

And all those ideas sound good. I think I need to obtain more kohl rabis (how does one form the plural?) and try out all options. Thanks, everyone!
