"Meet at Kings Cross platform 9 3/4 at 6", we'd said. Straightforward enough. We spent the day shopping, clearing the place up, and so on, and at about 4, thought maybe we should check train times. So Dave wandered over to the main PC. "There aren't any" he said. What? No, really. Kings Cross line undergoing maintenance. No trains. Bus replacement.

OK. We have alternatives. We could drive to Bedford, pick up the St Pancras line. Or we could drive down just inside the M25 and pick up the Northern Line. Considering comparative car-park security.. off we go to the Northern Line. There are two branches, one of which goes through Kings Cross and the other doesn't, but even if we get the other one to start with, we just get off a few stations short and pick up the right train. So that's what we did, texting Daniel to say we'd be late once we realised just how slow the Northern Line was.

Except... that second branch. The one we had to change to. Closed. So we got back on the train, got to Euston instead (about 10 min after we were meant to be in Kings Cross), and started walking - sending another text, as by now we were going to be 30 min late, and that might mean having to call the restaurant and stop our booking being cancelled due to no-show.

Much limping later (I was knackered to start with, and had done Summat Nasty to my foot a few days ago), we got there. And found out why Daniel hadn't been answering my texts. The mobile was still in Germany. Aargh! How on earth were we meant to contact him, if anything had gone (more) wrong?

Anyway, we did eventually meet up at platform 9 3/4, and I now have the photographic evidence.

Kings Cross with no trains is eeriely empty.

And off for food. Daniel and Karin had found a little place near the Angel: "The New Cultural Revolution". Er, yes. Chinese, fresh food and taking a pride in it, no MSG. And yes, it was good. Low prices, good food.
