I'm not sure I believe this. Having been sent three different tax codes, with the one for my current employment being wrong, I phoned the tax office, expecting either "sorry, we're shut", or "your call is very important to us, please hang on." If I ever got through, I expected obfustication and incomprehension.
I got a friendly menu that explained things and gave advice. Once I knew I needed a Human, the phone rang them about twice before a voice called "Emma" answered it: a voice with beautiful clear diction and a lovely soft Welsh accent, by the way. She went through identifying me, then pulled up the records. We now know exactly why I'm on the wrong tax code, and while it would have been nice if I could have tracked down a document that vanished 18 months ago even if I'd ever had it, she could cope without. Yes, I'm due a refund, and the IET need to be informed of my new code. In order for this to happen, I need to do.... nothing. She put it all in motion while I was on the phone.
