Here's a lady I wish I'd heard of before

Matilda of Tuscany aka Matilda of Canossa.
I encountered her name on this rather interesting site:

and followed through from there to Wikipedia.
She seems to have spent a lot of her adult life leading armies to defend the Pope, and..
"Under the tutelage of Arduino della Padule, however, she did learn the military arts, such as horseriding and arms. According to Lodovico Vedriani, there were two suits of her armour in the "Quattro Castelli" until 1622"
