That was fun!

First ACW event of the season, over at Doddington, near Ely.
Just about got over the cold enough to go, though not to camp. Dave went over yesterday (no public, no battle) and came back with a bundle of documents they wanted edited. No e-version of course, so it was scan, OCR, edit. Then re-read, and ask if I can please get the spelling and grammar right. Oh, and the content - your artillery drill as written never fires the gun... much hacking ensured!
Today, I went over in civvie female dress (the new work-level dress from the States, now being worn without corset!), and still frantically sewing the vivandiere blouse. Got that done while sitting in Kelly's tent, went and changed, and we think the result is pretty good.

I wasn't sure if I'd be up to working the gun - just walking across from the car left me pretty tired - but did drill anyway, as the revision would be handy later in the season and I wanted to check the mods we'd done to the drill documents fitted reality. Yes, there were bits missing (need to go and hack some more).
Well, come the 3pm battle there were only 4 of us to make a gun-crew, so on condition that I was only doing vent (the easy job), off I went to "man" the gun. A fun battle, though I have no idea what went on (other than the Union artillery rarely firing, and the Union infantry failing to fall over - situation normal!)
Apparently we were near a Union camp and their guns, hiding in the bushes. The infantry with us crept out and captured the guns, then we joined them, turned the guns round on the camp, and started using them. Much back and forth later, with no-one having ever shot at us, were were ordered to retreat. Almost out of ammo, anyway. I'm not too sure why we lost the battle, I gather the Green Goblins (Union sharpshooters) had had their flag taken, too. All went well for the South, except that the script says we lost...

Then home, shattered, via a Chinese takeaway.
I'll do the drill document updates tomorrow.
Conclusion on the new uniform is that mostly it's good. No overheating problems at all. I've lost weight since the skirt was made, I need to take the waistband in. And next blouse I make will be longer, it keep coming untucked. But mostly, good. Easy to move in, enough protection for the job.
