Sorry about that. Happy Xmas, anyway, and my apologies to those of you to whom I'd intended to send e-cards.
Random thought, as the brain wakes up gently - cream cheese with black pepper in it. Why? It makes about as much sense as cucumber curry.
I'd been more or less "here" up to the office Xmas party, Thursday a week before Xmas (well, cough at that point was bad enough that I had people emailing me from a different office asking what I was doing in work). Friday I got a fever as well, and the streaming cold on repeat, so that afternoon Dave took me to the doctor. New lot of antibiotics - erythromycin. We've known for ages that they have certain digestive side-effects, but they've never been this bad before, not even close. So by Saturday this is a catarrh-producing cough so bad I can't cough and stand, a streaming cold, a fever - and an inability to keep down even water for more than 5 mins. Can we spell "dehydration"? Oh, and did I mention that the way to stop the sideeffects of the anti-Bs is to take them with food - could have fooled me!
The cough, incidentally, is not too bad if upright, but almost continual if lying down. Sleep? What's that? I've got an asthma inhaler, but if I try to use it, the powder hitting the back of my throat starts the cough again.
Wednesday, and things are much the same except that the only solid food that's gone in (and then left rapidly) is three slices of bread, two with jam on, a cupasoup and a cup of Bovril. Can no longer manage to walk more than about 5 yards without stopping, can't get up the stairs unaided. I've been sleeping upright in an armchair for a few nights now anyway.
Back to the doctor. Drop those anti-Bs, have smoe new ones - one a day, easier anyway - and hi thee to the hospital for a chest Xray. So that was Thursday. A few problems with drop-off/parking at the Lister as usual, since I could just about stagger from car to front door, fall into a chair and wait for Dave, but we sorted it. Results will be back in the New Year. Considering the note from the doctor near the bottom of the form "pneumonia?" I'd have preferred a little more urgency on this, but such is life.
Since then, life hads been improving. I'm still sleeping downstairs, but I seem to be a lot more awake during the day. Eating better - today has been two crumpets with cream cheese and smoked salmon, AND peanuts, AND a quarter-sandwich with prawns and mayo in it.
Down-side - Dave's long-term cough has acquired the fever to go with it, so I'm now looking after him.
Good bits - quite a lot. Parents came round yesterday to exchange pressies. And today - Santa brought me a netbook! This netbook! I can get online better than via the phone, and without having to go upstairs! Squee!!
