I need new specs? Cost - £3
Mar. 2nd, 2014 02:53 am Well, sort of. My nice new vari-focals cost close to £500, but considering that I need them, all day, every day, I don't object too much. What did upset me was when, not that long after getting them, I realised that my eyes had changed to the point that I couldn't see the screen on the PC, either at work or at home.
Well, it's not as if I spend much time on the PC, or rely on it to earn a living or anything... The trouble is, you see, that the vari-focals are set up so that when I'm looking straight ahead, not up or down, I get long-range vision. Very sensible too, for driving, walking around, and so on. My PC screen is about 2'6" from my eyes, and until very recently, that counted as distance vision, more or less.
Now, that 2'6" comes into my close-to-middle range. If I want to see the screen clearly, I tip my head back to look through the bottom of the specs, getting a near-instant crick in the neck. Or, I simply take the specs off. I then wander off to get a coffee without them, forget where I've put them (yes, on the desk in front of me), and generally get Confused.
So this morning, we dropped in to the opticians. As I expected, he can't make the specs telepathic either, which they'd need to be to work out whether "straight ahead" meant distance or close at any given moment. What he could do was a slight tweak to the frames that meant they sat differently and any tilting of the head back was less extreme. And he sold me a cord to attach to them so I can wear them round my neck. That was the £3.
Interestingly, I've been doing PC work and crafting all evening, and they've stayed round my neck. Maybe not wearing them is good practice for my eyes, or something.
