The Neanderthal theory
It's from a while ago, the writing style isn't brilliant, but it's thorough, and I like the way the writer points to holes in their own theory and suggests ways of testing for and against. I don't know about paleoanthropology to pick holes in it myself, but if I assume the author did their research at the time (and the attitude and huge list of references suggest that they did), there could be something in this. Insufficient data to be sure, but it looks like a hypothesis worth considering.
