Getting fit, the Welsh way.
Jul. 8th, 2012 07:03 pm We're in Beddgelert for the week, in a self-catering cottage. Drove up early Saturday morning, dropped into a farm shop that sold us bison steak and wild boar burgers, and spent part of the day exploring Portmadog, since we couldn't collect the keys till 14:00. There was a little train (which we didn't play on), a nice place to eat (smoked haddock chowder turns out to be amazingly low on points), and lots of little shops including an extremely good model and wargames shop where we didn't spend much at all, honest. Well, it's possible that Dave got me a few bits for my birthday, since I left a pile of boxes on the counter, then turned my back.... A Real Camera shop advised on why my camera had stopped working, and fixed it (dirt in the lens). There was a Real Bookshop (didn't spend much there, either, on the same principles).
Porthmadog not only has Little Shops run by people who know what they're talking about, it also has a town playground where parents actually take their small children, public toilets that aren't locked, and work, with no vandalism or graffiti, and crazy golf in the same park. The place is in a 1970s time warp. I liked the 1970s :)
I've discovered a problem I hadn't expected with this Being Healthy lark. Shoes, and socks. What with swollen feet and ankles, I've been in Crocs, or slipper-like things, for years. The feet are now foot-shaped, and I'm back in "real" shoes - a pair of sandals with trainer-like soles, trainers, and so on. That's a lot less cushioning than I'm used to, and just walking round town, my feet are sore. Socks - after many years in support stockings, I don't wear them. Now, with smaller feet, I need some to stop my shoes being too loose, not to mention the cushioning to deal with soreness. I still have swollen ankles, so need to be careful they don't dig in at that point. We're doing a lot of shopping...
Last night, we stocked up on supplies in the local grocer, and had wild boar burgers in buns, with salad. Today, we've hit a Morrison's, and the bison steaks will have boiled spuds and various veg as accompaniment (we found the reduced veg area, with everything at 9p, and bought it). Tomorrow night will be prawns stirfried with veg and noodles. We have assorted packs of ready-prepped fruit for desserts. That means I can go slightly mad at lunchtime - today, for instance, we found a pasty that's a lot like a Bedfordshire Clanger, only Welsh. Savoury one end, apple the other. I haven't had a pasty for ages, and at 20 points each (guesstimated), I probably won't again.
Today, by the way, was Caernarfon. Drizzle didn't help, and the town centre turned out to be shut on a Sunday, but we looked round the castle from the outside, and played with photos - castle from various angles, and flower macros. Then we wandered round the coast finding nature reserves and ancient abandoned churches, dropped into Llanberis to check out the shops and have coffee at Pete's Eats, and got back early to doze.
I've done flat walking, walking up hills, walking down hills, and am generally feeling more confident about doing Snowdon on Tuesday - if only the weather holds out! Even going along the railway path, I'm not mountain walking in cloud, and cloud base today was well below where it needed to be.
