Funny colour tomatoes, advance planning
Jan. 2nd, 2012 01:08 amA friend mentioned purple tomatoes, and that sent me web-searching for seeds. I think I may be ordering a few things for later on in the year. The other thing I'm still after is a dwarf so small that it really can go in a pot on my desk, and maybe....
Thompson & Morgan.
Tomato ‘Bajaja’ is a versatile variety as its size can be controlled by the size of the container in which it is planted. This makes it ideal for an early tomato crop in patio containers, and this compact bush variety won’t require side shooting, making it particularly easy to grow. Height and spread: 35cm (14").
Somewhat bigger:
Tomato 'Black Cherry'
...this exotic-looking, blackish-purple skinned cherry tomato with dark red flesh...
Height: 200cm (79"). Spread: 50cm (20") - they suggest a 5 foot garden cane.
Tomato 'Black Russian' - Heritage
...medium sized black tomatoes grow on compact plants bearing plenty of dark mahogany-brown fruits... and another for the 5 foot cane treatment.
Tiny, but expensive:
Tomato 'Losetto'
Cascading bush, Height and spread: 30cm (12").
£3.69 will get me 6 seeds.
And the last tiny one:
Tomato 'Sweet 'n' Neat Cherry Red'
An ultra compact, upright bush variety reaching only 30cm (12") in height
There's lots of yellow tomatoes, too, but that's almost boring. Ebay finds me more purple ones, but they're all cordon, and with me growing in growbags, greenhouses, and pots, I'm not convinced this is a good idea.
