Socks. Only not your usual socks. I wear, and have worn for years, grade 2 medical support/compression stockings. They're rather like the things you get sold for stopping thrombosis on aeroplanes, only more so - these things are prescription only. They're thick, ugly, and in that shade known as "flesh" that's a sort of pale brown.
Every pair I have, the heels wear out, leaving a large hole that's far too uncomfortable to wear (this is serious compression, and if a bit of it goes missing, the edges hurt).
Yes, what's on offer is a lot of socks with holes in the heels - but given this rather specialist material, I'm reluctant to just throw them out in case someone with more imagination than me can think of a use for them.
