Wondering which netbook to get
May. 27th, 2009 12:48 amIt's going to have to happen. Trying to find one that fits my requirements, though, that's hard. Let's see if I can put a spec together, maybe my LJ FL can come up with ideas or recommendations.
1) It must be small - small enough to live in my handbag at all times. That means the 7" screen, not 10". Solid state preferred to hard disc, because I want to keep the weight down.
2) It's a NETbook. Must be able to get online, anytime, anywhere, and that means mobile broadband, not just WIFI. I've heard that for most suppliers of plug-in modem dongles, that means Windoze.
3) Must be able to open quite large and graphic-heavy PDFs to read.
4) Must be able to edit text files and spreadsheets in a format compatible with MS Word. I'm thinking of documents up to about 9K words.
5) When I say "small", that includes not wasting space on a trackpad. I hate the things, and it occupies valuable space in front of the keyboard. Give me one of those little nipple things in the middle of the keyboard anyday.
6) GPS would be nice.
7) Not interested in any webcams or other cams.
So far the one thing I've seen that fits this spec is the Sony Vaio - but the price is a bit of a killer. Anyone know of anything else that doesn't have a track-pad?
edit: the Lenovo S10 is being mentioned... but it seems that the latest version has had the touchpad/trackpad put back in.
