That's a bit of a rant (it's wrong because it's WRONG level), but in the middle it explains about the old mechaical type-writers, their monospaced fonts, and how they made the gap between narrow letters like i and l bigger than a real space, so having two spaces after the full-stop made it easier to read.
I usually write in HTML. Double spaces get condensed down to one by the browser.
